A popular veteran show pilot was killed Sunday while performing at a stunt show in Northern California. Edward Andreini, 77, flew a 1944 Stearman biplane and had been flying since the age of 16, according to his website. More than 100,000 people were gathered to watch the show at Travis Air Force Base. Andreini was attempting to perform a “cutting the ribbon,” a move in which the plane inverts and flies close to the ground to attempt to cut a ribbon with a knife attached to it. Tragically, the place crashed and caught fire. Nearly two and a half minutes went by before someone came with a fire extinguisher, though by then the tarmac was already engulfed in flames. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating Andreini’s crash and death.
