After spending eight years studying a 1.8 million-year-old skull found in Georgia, scientists believe they’ve made a discovery that could tell a new story of human evolution. In findings published in the journal Science, the team of researches concluded that the skull suggests early hominids may have varied much more widely than previously thought—meaning there were fewer ancestral species separating the first hominids from modern humans. Scientists had always assumed different fossils came from different species, but Skull 5 was found next to four other hominids, and gave them the opportunity to compare characteristics.
