Somali Soccer Fans Defy Militants

The World Cup has finally arrived on African soil, but Somali soccer fanatics are forced to defy their government in order to take a game in. In Mogadishu, the Islamic militia group al Shabaab that controls much of the country, has banned watching the games on television, calling the spectator sport un-Islamic. Beheadings and amputations have been used to punish those who disobey the militia's orders. Yet wealthier Somalis are lining up to buy satellite dishes for viewing. "If we have no jobs and can't watch or play football it's heartbreaking—and unacceptable," one 22-year-old told The Wall Street Journal.
