As Ebola ravages West Africa in one of the worst outbreaks of the virus in history, some U.S. universities are forcing students from the region to be screened when they arrive on campus. Among the colleges are the University of Illinois, the University of Buffalo, and Mercer University. According to the federal government, U.S. universities have 9,728 active students from Nigeria, 204 from Liberia, 169 from Sierra Leone and 95 students from Guinea. While the Ebola screenings may reassure administrators—and parents—some think it’s unnecessary. “I can see why there would be concern; there’s no vaccine for it,” said Fatima Nor, a student from Nigeria who is enrolled at the University of Buffalo for the fall. But she doesn’t think rigorous screenings are necessary. “As long as everyone keeps their personal space, it should be OK,” she says.
