Artist Susan Philipz has won the Turner Prize for contemporary art for a sound installation, the first time a sound piece has been shortlisted for the prize since its beginning in 1984. The installation in an empty gallery of the Tate Britain in London featured Philipz singing three versions of the Scottish folk song “Lowlands Away.” In a statement, prize organizers said, “Drawing on the powerful, immersive properties of sound and the human voice, Philipsz is engaged with the notion of singing as a physical and sculptural experience.” Past winners include Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin.
