At least 78 people are dead on Saturday after flash floods swept through the south Russian region of Krasnodar. The floods came at night, according to reports, and were so powerful they ripped traffic lights out of the pavement. Around 13,000 residents are affected, according to the local government, and rescue crews have been dispatched from Moscow to help search for survivors, some of whom appeared to be stranded on roofs. Evacuations are under way. After flying over the area, regional governor Alexander Tkachev tweeted that “something unimaginable” was happening. Tkachev told a Russian news agency that the flooding was the worst the area had seen in 70 years.
