Police are searching for a gold-colored squirrel monkey who was stolen from the San Francisco Zoo some time late Thursday or early Friday. “This was a criminal act of vandalism and trespassing, and we are working with police to identify the perpetrators,” said the zoo’s executive director Tanya Peterson. The monkey, Banana Sam, is one of 20 squirrel monkeys donated to the zoo last year after a local research institution closed. Squirrel monkeys are not endangered, and many are kept as pets—although it is illegal to do so in California. Zoo officials are offering $5,000 as a reward for Banana Sam’s return.
