Only three months after their boss was elected to Congress, staffers working for Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) started complaining about sexual harassment. Workers told The Washington Post that Massa said he wanted to have sex with men who worked in the office. Still, it took a year of complaining by staffers for congressional leadership to take the problem seriously. One attorney for a staffer said the delay “left my client and other gay men in the office even more vulnerable to Representative Massa's predatory behavior." In one complaint, a staffer said Massa attempted to fondle him in a hotel room during the 2008 campaign. In another incident, Massa was yanked out of a Washington bar because of inappropriate comments he was making to a 21-year-old intern.
