Students at UC Davis are sticking up for a dead attorney who wasn't allowed to practice law in California because he was Chinese. In 1890, the California Supreme Court denied an application from Hong Yeng Chang to practice law. The Columbia and Yale graduate was the first Chinese immigrant to become a lawyer but when he moved to California, the federal Chinese Exclusion Act kept him from practicing. UC Davis's Asian Pacific American Law Students Association and two professors have submitted an application to the State Bar of California on Chang's behalf, and will then petition the state's high court.
