People leave all sorts of things behind during hospital stays. In this case, Cornelius Gurlitt, a late well-known art collector, left a suitcase containing a painting by Monet that went missing 75 years ago. Some experts believe Monet may have painted the newly rediscovered landscape in 1864, given similarities to the French impressionist master’s Vue de Sainte-Adresse, which was completed that year. Gurlitt was the reclusive son of a Nazi-era art dealer who amassed a huge collection, some of it obtained through trading in works looted or confiscated by German forces. Gurlitt, who died in May at age 81, was accused of inheriting hundreds of the stolen artworks. He died after spending months in the hospital.
