Super PACs, the political committees that, unlike regular PACs, have no limit on how much money they can donate to campaigns, have spent a total of $35.4 million on the 2012 presidential election so far. More than half of this money has been dedicated to the fight between current frontrunners Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. The two candidates' main super Pacs, Restore Our Future and Winning Our Future, respectively, have concentrated most of their spending on attack ads against one another rather than ads that promote their candidate. Conservative super PACs spent more than $600,000 attacking President Obama over the past year, while labor union AFSCME spent $1 million on a single Romney attack-ad buy in Florida.
