The Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans—the football stadium where at least 25,000 people took shelter during and after Hurricane Katrina damaged much of the city in 2005—was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places this week. The federal label includes tax benefits for the property, but the state agency in charge of the stadium worries that the designation could slow down needed improvements after the hurricane, as construction is harder to conduct on such protected buildings.
