Pakistani intelligence officials have claimed suspected U.S. drones fired missiles in the country's tribal region on Sunday night, killing seven militants and wounding five others. The anonymous officials said two missiles hit a vehicle and four others struck a Taliban compound. Several militant groups who live in the targeted tribal region are eager to attack the U.S. and its NATO forces occupying Afghanistan's border. Many of these groups are linked to the al-Qaeda terrorist network, and the region has been a battle zone for the Pakistani army and the United States. Meanwhile, part of northwestern Pakistan that had recently agreed to a peace deal with rival Muslim tribes was attacked by gunmen on Sunday who killed nine civilians in Hangu district, according to police official Mir Chaman Khan. Though there is no clear evidence that the ambush was connected to the Taliban Sunnis, the gunmen attacked a van of civilians that was coming from a town dominated by the Taliban's rival Shiites. There have also been reports that Taliban militants had planned to take advantage of the area's peace deal to gain more territory along the Pakistan-Afghan border.
