Syrian state TV reported 120 police officers dead in an ambush by "armed groups" on Monday, after a weekend of a heavy government crackdown on protests in the country's northwest region. Syrian reports say the troops were en route to aid residents who had called for help when they were attacked by assailants and killed in an explosion near a post office. The town of Jisr al-Shughour has been in turmoil over the past few days, since government forces invaded to quell uprisings. Human rights groups claim at least 42 town residents have been killed over the weekend.
