The Syrian military launched new raids on Sunday into the eastern city of Deir al-Zour, the fifth-largest in the country and one of the most restive. The pre-dawn attack came as dozens of tanks rolled into town, which the military had previously opted to stay out of in fears of provoking more anti-government protests. The siege comes one day after the United Nations warned President Bashar al-Assad to immediately put a stop to the violent crackdown, and a week after forces launched a devastating attack on the city of Hama, reportedly killing hundreds.
