The so-called “bathroom bill” in Texas is officially dead after the state House adjourned from its 30-day special session. “I'm disappointed,” said Sen. Lois Kolkhorst, the bill’s author. “In our most intimate spaces, there should be some lines drawn.” The bill would require transgender individuals in the state to use the bathroom that corresponds with their birth gender, rather than the gender with which they identify. Activists in Texas expect the legislation, even though it won’t be taken up this session, to be used as a wedge issue in future elections.
