Texas wasted no time responding to the Supreme Court’s decision today that struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act. Within two hours of the ruling, state attorney general, Greg Abbott, announced that a very restrictive voter-ID law blocked last year along with a redistricting map that was found to be discriminatory by a federal court could “take effect immediately.” The Justice Department put a stop to the ID law last year, saying that it unfairly targeted Hispanic and poor voters who are less likely to have identification and have more difficulty getting to licensing offices.
