The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has announced that it will evacuate about 4,500 inmates from three prisons near the Brazos River, where water levels are rapidly rising after Hurricane Harvey. The move comes as authorities warn of “catastrophic” flooding in certain areas, with rainfall expected to last for days. The Ramsey, Terrell, and Stringfellow prisons in Rosharon will be evacuated and the prisoners moved to facilities in east Texas, authorities said. The move was set to begin early Saturday morning, with correctional officers to accompany inmates during the transfer.
