Amid new reports that the death toll from the Tuesday earthquake in Haiti might top 100,000, mobile charity company mGive reports that its software, which allows cellphone subscribers to use text messages to donate money, helped raise more than $1.2 million by Tuesday evening. After coordinating with the Red Cross and the State Department late Tuesday night, mGive started a campaign for cellphone users to donate $10 to the charity by texting the word "Haiti" to the number 90999. The amount is charged to the donor's cellphone bill; mGive, which typically charges a licensing fee for its software and a transaction fee for each donation, is waiving its fees due to the catastrophic nature of the quake. "This is a huge tragedy and we simply hope to help provide relief," said mGive Chief Executive Tony Aiello.
