Leading officials in the Catholic Church, including Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI), did nothing to stop a Wisconsin priest who molested hundreds of deaf boys from 1950 to 1974. The church had been warned by American bishops, The New York Times reports, but Rev. Lawrence C. Murphy continued to work within the church. The news comes as the pope faces scrutiny over fresh allegations of abuse in Germany. Evidence of the new troubling case was provided by lawyers involved in lawsuits brought against the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Murphy died in 1998 and was never disciplined by the church.
