At least 80 people were arrested in St. Louis on Sunday as protests continued for a third day over a former police officer’s acquittal in the fatal shooting of a black man. Former police officer Jason Stockley was found not guilty Friday in the 2011 killing of Anthony Lamar Smith. Authorities say the third night of protests saw major vandalism and property damage, and police said one bike officer was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening leg injury. More than 1,000 demonstrators marched through the city’s downtown area on Sunday afternoon in what authorities described as a nonviolent rally, though an “unruly crowd” stuck around and later began throwing objects through windows and destroying property, police said. Police Commissioner Larry O’Toole gave a late news conference on Sunday night. “Some criminals assaulted law-enforcement officers and threw chemicals and rocks at them,” O’Toole said. “We’re in control, this is our city, and we’re going to protect it.”
