Even though his men slaughtered nearly 8,000 Muslim boys and men in a bout of “ethnic cleansing” during the July 1995 Srebrenica massacre, and established “rape camps” in eastern Bosnia for women, thousands of supporters of accused war criminal Ratko Mladic have taken to the streets in the Serbian capital Belgrade to protest his arrest. Many ultranationalist Serbs still regard the 69-year-old former general as a war hero, despite his reported involvement in genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity during the Yugoslav wars, and a €10 million reward for information leading to his capture offered by the Serbian government. The BBC reported that several scuffles took place between the protesters and police, who had stepped up security ahead of the demonstration.
