On Thursday, excavators discovered a time capsule from 1795 tucked into a cornerstone of the Massachusetts State House, placed there during a ceremony that both Samuel Adams and Paul Revere took part in. The capsule, originally made of cowhide but replaced with a metal box in 1855, is thought to contain a collection of coins dating back to 1652, an engraved silver plate, newspapers, the seal of the Commonwealth, cards and the title page of the Massachusetts Colony Records. Officials plan to X-ray the capsule and hopefully open it next week.
