A study lead by University of Michigan researchers tried to pinpoint the behaviors people exhibit when lying.
Common perceptions would lead you to believe that liars usually avoid eye contact; however the results of the study indicated otherwise. Researchers found that people who were lying were more likely to talk with their hands, maintain eye contact, nod their heads, and frown.
The study was conducted by reviewing 118 clips of trial footage to determine what truthful behavior looked like. Researchers established the liars by the trial verdict. Forty percent of liars used hand gestures as opposed to 25 percent of people who were telling the truth.
While this evidence certainly doesn't imply that all hand talkers are liars, it is interesting that one of our presidential candidates seems to do this a lot. Just saying…
