A top Republican Party official and Trump campaign fundraiser provided a six-figure boost to pro-Trump outside spending efforts this year. According to a new filing with the Federal Election Commission, Michigan Republican Party Chairman Ronald Weiser donated $200,000 in April to America First Action, the super-PAC arm of pro-Trump dark-money group America First Policies. In addition to his leadership role with the Michigan GOP, Weiser was the vice-chair of Trump’s 2016 joint fundraising committee, and raised money for the president’s inauguration and his transition team. He was the super PAC’s only donor in the first half of the year, according to the FEC report. America First Action shares staff and office space with its 501(c)(4) sister organization, the report indicates. The dark-money group has sought to press Trump’s legislative agenda through ads and grassroots advocacy targeting both Democrats and Republicans in Congress who oppose that agenda.
