The east coast of the U.S. is digging itself out from under almost a foot and a half of snow that accumulated Sunday. New York City, New Jersey, and Long Island were the hardest hit. In addition to New Jersey, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Maine, and Massachusetts all declared states of emergency. Snow drifts were as high as five feet. The storm came at a bad time for travelers, thousands of whom were stranded by flight, bus, and train cancellations and delays. New York’s three major airports—JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark's Liberty—will remain closed into at least late Monday afternoon. So far, over 2,000 flights have been cancelled. Long Island Rail Road suspended service, and bus companies canceled routes. More than 2,400 sanitation workers were doing 12-hour shifts trying to clear New York City streets. New York City closed zoos and aquariums, and the New England Aquarium bubble-wrapped its penguin ice sculptures.
