At a rally near Milwaukee on Tuesday night, Donald Trump struck out at his Democratic presidential opponent, describing Hillary Clinton as “against the police” in the wake of massive protests against a fatal police shooting in the city. Trump said Clinton had contributed to an “anti-police” atmosphere in the country and was “peddling the narrative of cops as a racist force in our society.” He slammed the recent protests and apparently tried to appeal to the city’s black community. “The violence, riots, and destruction that have taken place in Milwaukee is an assault on the right of citizens to live in security and to live in peace,” Trump said at the rally in West Bend, about 40 miles from where the demonstrations erupted. “The main victims of these riots are law-abiding African-American citizens living in these neighborhoods,” he said, adding that “it’s their job, it’s their homes, it’s their schools and communities which will suffer the most as a result. ... Crime and violence is an attack on the poor and will never be accepted in a Trump administration.” Trump’s comments seemed at odds with his recent refusal to speak at recent conventions for the NAACP, Urban League, and the National Association of Black Journalists/National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
