President Donald Trump on Thursday announced attorney Alexander Acosta as his next labor secretary pick, just one day after fast-food executive Andrew Puzder withdrew his bid over controversies seen as likely to upend his confirmation. Acosta, who is Latino, is an attorney who has served in the Justice Department’s civil rights division, and is the current dean of Florida International University’s law school. He also served as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and clerked for Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito when Alito was an Appeals Court judge. Trump had previously been criticized for a lack of Latino picks for his Cabinet. “He is going to be a tremendous secretary of labor,” Trump said.
