After days of outrage over his silence, President Trump tweeted on Monday condemning the “violent attacks” in Portland last week that led to the death of two men. “The victims were standing up to hate and intolerance,” he wrote. “Our prayers are w/ them.” Two men were killed and another was injured after they intervened to protect a 16-year-old girl, Destinee Mangum, after a man began shouting anti-Muslim slurs at her and a friend who was wearing a hijab. The 35-year-old suspect, Jeremy Christian, allegedly stabbed the three victims. “I just want to say thank you to the people who put their life on the line for me,” Mangum said, through tears. “Because they didn't even know me and they lost their lives because of me and my friend and the way we look.”
