David Cay Johnston, who on Tuesday night reported on the first two pages of one of President Trump’s undisclosed income-tax returns, says he was the victim of harassment and threats overnight. “Trump fans call & harass my wife & one of my children after I break story White House confirmed. Sad! Let’s have open debate, not threats,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist tweeted. “To be clear, folks, I don’t intimidate. But calls to family are out of bounds, a disturbing sign of how Trump damages civil debate.” Johnston, who is a Daily Beast contributor and has covered Trump and his business dealings for more than 30 years, appeared on MSNBC to break the news that Trump owed $38 million in federal taxes on income of more than $150 million, according to two pages of his 2005 tax return. The White House responded to the report before Johnston even appeared on TV, stating, “Mr. Trump paid $38 million even after taking into account large-scale depreciation for construction, on an income of more than $150 million, as well as paying tens of millions of dollars in other taxes such as sales and excise taxes and employment taxes and this illegally published return proves just that.” Trump also tweeted Wednesday morning about the story: “Does anybody really believe that a reporter, who nobody ever heard of, ‘went to his mailbox’ and found my tax returns? @NBCNews FAKE NEWS!” Trump has refused to release his tax returns, citing an ongoing IRS audit.
