President-elect Donald Trump’s team is working to remove one of the top officials at NATO: Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller, who was nominated by President Obama. The Washington Post reports officials with Trump’s transition team attended a Brussels meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to communicate that they did not approve of Gottemoeller and would like to have her replaced. The team, notably, did not submit a formal request for her removal. Gottemoeller began her job in October and has a multi-year contract under NATO rules. She is not bound to a contract with the U.S. government. Whether Stoltenberg agrees to the reported request or not, Gottemoeller’s role will likely change under a Trump presidency, since his administration could do much to make her job more difficult, the Post reports.
