Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali announced Thursday he will not seek reelection after 23 years in office. According to witnesses, hundreds of people stormed into the streets of the capital hours after curfew to celebrate Ben Ali’s announcement. The leader of the opposition party welcomed the pledge, and called for the immediate creation of a coalition government, despite the fact that Ben Ali is set to remain in power until his term ends in 2014. Rioting has gripped Tunisia’s capital, Tunis, since mid-December, and the government said 23 protesters have been killed. Ben Ali and his family have been accused of widespread corruption, and protesters had taken up the chant “Down with Ben Ali.”
