Turkish authorities charged 14 men in a suspected al Qaeda plot to attack the U.S. Embassy in Istanbul, just as U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton was arriving for a meeting. There has been speculation that Islamist militants living in Turkey and affiliated with Osama bin Laden's terror group have been plotting to avenge the death of their late leader. Apparently one of the suspects was caught surveilling the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, while police have seized 1,500 pounds of chemicals, bomb-making instructions, assault rifles, and ammo from other suspects. In 2008, three policemen were killed outside the U.S. Consulate in Istanbul, and in 2003, Turkish Islamic militants with ties to al Qaeda killed 58 people in an attack on Istanbul's British Consulate and two synagogues in the city.
