The Turkish military on Wednesday released an audio recording of what it says was proof it gave warning to a Russian warplane before it was shot down near the Syrian border earlier this week. A voice on the recording is heard saying, “Change your heading south immediately.” The audio release comes just hours after the surviving Russian crew member told Russian media that there had been no warning or even contact by the Turkish military. Konstantin Murakhtin, who was rescued in a joint operation by Syrian and Russian troops, also denied entering Turkish airspace. The other pilot was killed by gunfire as he parachuted from the burning plane. The Turkish military maintains it gave 10 warnings to the plane before it was shot down, and said it was ready for “all kinds of cooperation” with Moscow over the incident.
