After what appears to have been an unsuccessful coup attempt, Turkey’s military chief of staff Gen. Hulusi Akar has been rescued at an air base outside of Anakara, Turkish media has reported. Akar was taken hostage late on Friday when a group within the military attempted to overthrow the government led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Akar was reportedly seized by pro-coup forces at military headquarters and then transported to the Akincilar Air Base, where he was held for several hours. He has reportedly been taken to a safe location and will now take charge of the military’s operation against the coup organizers.
