A judge in London ruled that a woman with learning disabilities can be sterilized by force. Justice Cobb declared that health and social services can force entry into her home, use “necessary restraint,” and sterilize a 36-year-old woman because she lacks the capacity to make proper decisions about contraception. The judge claimed it was not about eugenics and that the woman had a history of hiding pregnancies from health professionals, and that “a future pregnancy, especially if concealed, is highly likely to lead to her death.”
