American states will need to find a new source for their death serum: The British government issued an order Monday requiring any company supplying sodium thiopental—one of the drugs used in American states’ three-drug execution protocol—to the U.S. to get an export license. Britain wants to emphasize its “moral opposition to the death penalty.” The decision comes after lawyers for American death-row inmates filed suit in Britain’s high court. British drugs have already been used to kill one inmate: Jeffrey Landrigan of Arizona. American states have been scrambling to turn up sources of thiopental after the sole U.S. manufacturer reported a shortage of the drug.
