Leaders from Sierra Leone, Benin, and Cape Verde are giving Laurent Gbagbo a last chance to step down and peacefully hand over the presidency of the Ivory Coast to Alassane Ouattara, the man internationally recognized to have won the election. In a sign that Ivory Coast’s neighbors are ready to take a hard line with Gbagbo, the African Union appointed Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga as special envoy to the Ivory Coast; Odinga was the first African leader to call for military action. Meanwhile, buses have stopped working in Abidjan after Ouattara called for a general strike in protest of the disputed election.
