Laurent Gbagbo’s residence must be quite the stronghold: The Ivory Coast leader, who refuses to hand power over to his democratically elected successor, is still holed up. The latest assault came from U.N. and French helicopters, which were retaliating for attacks by Gbagbo’s forces on U.N. headquarters. The attacks were personally authorized by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon. Gbagbo’s opponent, Alassane Outtara, may not be the hero he once seemed: A U.N. report says his troops have killed hundreds of civilians, raped Gbagbo’s supporters, and burned villages.
