As North and South Korea continue to push each other’s buttons, the U.N. Security Council convened an emergency meeting on Sunday in an effort to ease tensions. Russia, one of North Korea’s neighbors and nearest allies, called for the session, claiming that escalations on the peninsula “directly affects the national security interests of the Russian Federation.” Moscow is requesting that the powerful council issue a statement urging the dueling nations “to exercise maximum restraint.” South Korea, however, is still planning to conduct live-fire drills on a border island at some point this week. The North has warned of a “catastrophe” if the South follows through with the plans.
