President Donald Trump imposed new sanctions on Iran on Friday morning, days after White House officials warned Tehran of being put “on notice” for test firing a ballistic missile last weekend in apparent violation of a UN resolution. The executive order targeted 13 Iranian individuals, and 12 entities—and resemble the moves made by the Obama administration after previous tests. The White House has not accused Iran of violating the nuclear deal, though. The new sanctions mark the beginning of a more aggressive policy against Iran, as Trump promised during his presidential campaign. A top adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei previously stated that Iran would not yield to “useless” threats from “an inexperienced person” over its missile program. The sanctions came hours after Trump and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif traded jabs on Twitter, with the president warning Tehran it was “playing with fire.”
