The U.S. is likely to keep the military bases at Kandahar and Jalalabad open past the end of 2015, despite President Obama’s promise of a military withdrawal by the end of this year, a senior U.S. official told Reuters. Obama said last May that U.S. forces would be reduced to just half of about 10,000, and would operate only from Kabul and Bagram. Obama is reportedly expected to decide within the next week whether to delay the withdrawal, ahead of next week’s visit from Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani and Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah. The White House had no immediate comment.
