U.S. military commanders reportedly want to keep at least a few thousand troops in Afghanistan after 2016, as a direct response to the Taliban’s capture of the city of Kunduz. President Obama had planned on keeping just 1,000 military personnel in the country after 2016. Some 9,800 U.S. troops are stationed in Afghanistan, some of whom have begun to directly target the Taliban once again.
