A "cyber attack" originating in China has affected the information technology systems of the University of Virginia, the school announced Friday evening. Federal authorities notified the university of a possible intrusion. The university confirmed the hack occured over two months ago. The university waited until now to publicly reveal the attack, while simultaneously informing the public that its systems would be undergoing a 48-hour security upgrade in response to it. Many of the university’s systems, including student email accounts, will be inaccessible during the upgrade, which is scheduled to end Sunday evening. "The University’s forensic examination has indicated that no personally identifiable information—such as Social Security numbers and banking information—or personal health information was accessed by the attackers," the university's press release noted.
