People who identify as real-life vampires worry about coming out to doctors about their blood-sucking ways, a new study reports. Researchers looked at 11 long-term self-identifying vampires, who say they find consenting donors to let them ingest blood. Participants worry that telling doctors about their identities would prejudice them based on unfounded stereotypes. The most common reason for the unusual ingestion was a lack of energy—researchers say vampires claim human blood perks them up. “Most vampires believe they were born that way; they don’t choose this,” said researcher D.J. Williams, adding that their community “seems to be a conscientious and ethical one.”
