A Vatican diplomat working in the Holy See’s embassy in Washington, D.C. has been sent back to the Vatican over a child-pornography investigation, officials said Friday. Prosecutors in the U.S. asked that the high-ranking priest be charged and face trial for the allegations. The Vatican has so far refused to identify the priest, who is now in Vatican City and under a separate investigation by Vatican prosecutors. State Department officials had asked that his diplomatic immunity be lifted on Aug. 21, but that request was denied. The Vatican has previously recalled other envoys, including an ambassador to the Dominican Republic who was accused of sexually abusing young boys in 2013.
