The Holy See recognized Palestine as a state in a treaty issued Wednesday, a change from previous diplomatic relations with the Palestinian Liberation Organization. The treaty has yet to be signed, but the move comes just ahead of a visit by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to the Vatican. This isn’t the Vatican’s first time talking about a Palestinian state: In 2012, it backed a UN General Assembly decision to that effect, and Pope Francis has referred to it as such in public appearances.
