Who’s in charge of the post-spill scrubbing here? The August issue of Vogue Italia features a 24-page “Water & Oil” editorial—shots by photographer Steven Meisel of 24-year-old Kristen McMenamy covered in oil, coughing up seawater, and wearing dirty black feathers on a beach. Refinery 29 says the photos are “beautiful,” but concludes “treating beauty and glamour out of tragedy seems quite fucked up to us, not to mention wasteful and hypocritical, seeing as thousands of dollars of luxury clothing was flown in, and then subsequently ruined for the shoot.”
