After weeks of resisting pressure to step down, N.Y. Rep. Anthony Weiner has told friends and colleagues he plans to leave Congress. Weiner called Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and fellow New Yorker Steve Israel, chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Wednesday night to inform them of his decision, according to NBC News. Speaker John Boehner said he had not been told. Weiner's decision comes more than two weeks after his lewd photo scandal began, and in the end he was done in not by Republicans or constituents but by his own party. In recent days, a slew of top Democrats had called on him to bow out and had threatened to strip him of committee assignments. The leaders had hoped that when Weiner’s wife Huma Abedin, an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, returned to the country Wednesday she would convince him to step down. The congressman has not made a public statement on resignation.
