White House Briefs Capitol Hill on Staffers’ Personal Email Use
BUT THEIR EMAILS
The White House has sent emissaries to Capitol Hill to answer questions about staffers’ use of personal email. Representatives of the White House Counsel’s office briefed staff from the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on the issue last week, according to sources familiar with the meeting. The briefing came in response to a letter that committee Chairman Ron Johnson (R-WI) sent to White House Counsel Don McGahn on Sept. 26 asking about White House staff compliance with federal record-keeping laws. At least half a dozen White House staffers have used their personal email accounts to discuss their government work, according to a New York Times story published the day before Johnson sent his letter to McGahn. The revelations generated scorching criticism for the White House, given President Donald Trump’s criticism of Hillary Clinton for using a personal email when she headed the U.S. Department of State.
